I have always loved the Chinese proverb "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime'. This is what happens at the Africa Yoga Project (AYP) in Nairobi, Kenya.
The mission of AYP is to educate, empower and employ youth in Africa through yoga. The journey begins with a 200 hour teacher training at the Shine Center. At the completion of the course the graduates then go to their communities and continue with "on the mat" training. This training continues through the entire AYP Academy Program to build skills and confidence as a yoga instructor. The program includes a minimum of 1200 hours of "on the mat" instruction.
AYP also includes "off the mat" programming that spans over a three year period. Some courses are Business Ethics and Core Values, How to Start Your Own Small Business, How to Create Your Own Website, and Introduction to Computers, That's just the beginning.
Upon graduation the students go back to their homes, open their own businesses, employ people from their communities, and start the chain of self sustainability for themselves and future generations.
A beautiful thing about yoga is that it requires no equipment and can be practiced anywhere by people of all ages and fitness levels. This is very important in a country where poverty is epidemic and unemployment is over 70%. AYP brings well-being into the hands of over 7,000 people a week in Kenya. Imagine what's possible for all of Africa.
Consider your donation as teaching men to fish.
When I was growing up, I was taught to give 10% of everything I earned to people less fortunate.I loved the idea that my contribution, no matter how small, was helping someone in need. As I got older and more jaded, it became difficult to trust organizations and people who said they needed help and would ask for money. AYP, has provided a way to give back to a population that is desperately in need and though a legitamite non profit.
100% of the funds raised go directly to The Africa Yoga Project to continue their work in Kenya. In partnering with AYP, you're not only supporting a great cause, but creating real lasting and global change.
The Ambassador Program is an opportunity to embody service in action. We invite individuals who are up for something BIG and ready to step into leadership as a catalyst for change in the global yoga community. Becoming a part of the Ambassador team is about embodying the mission of Africa Yoga Project, building connection, and being dedicated to raising significant funds to support the use of yoga to elevate individuals and empower communities.
