It has been an honor and a privilege for DDY to host Walter Mugwe of the Africa Yoga Project at Down Dog Yoga this summer through our new Cultural Exchange Partnership with The Africa Yoga Project!

AYP empowers over 250,000 Kenyans each year through the power of yoga. By providing free yoga classes to those of all ages, communities are uplifted and impacted through the positive connection yoga offers. Walter Mugwe was one of many lucky Kenyans to receive the gift of free yoga classes through the efforts and love of the Africa Yoga Project, and he now stands as a powerful yoga teacher, empowering and inspiring others in Nairobi and beyond.

Here’s what Walter shared with DDY Students:
"Growing up in the slums of Nairobi, I was left with the responsibility of supporting my mother and siblings after my father died unexpectedly when I was 7 years old. By the age of 8, I was involved in crimes such as illegal gambling, theft, and drug dealing, was exposed to violence and murder, and witnessed the deaths of my two best friends. When I was 17, Paige Elenson, the creator of the Africa Yoga Project, visited my classroom. As a physically active acrobat, I thought that yoga would be boring and slow; but the physicality and challenge of the practice immediately drew me in, and I found myself practicing as often as I could. Lying in Savasana was the first time in my life I had ever experienced peace. I got curious about this practice of yoga, and began to practice everyday."
Through a scholarship, Walter was accepted into a Baptiste Level 1 Training in Africa, and the rest is history.
So many of you are already helping through your continued support of Walter's teaching here this summer. Let’s keep it going! And if you haven't been able to make it to one of his classes yet, this is the perfect way to show your support - even from afar.
