Roberta Paixao Cortes
Hello everyone and thanks for checking my page out! My name is Roberta Paixao Cortes and I am a professional contemporary dancer and a yogi.
I am originally from Brasil, where I studied classical ballet. As a professional dancer, I was always looking for ways to stretch and work out my body, and that is how I was introduced to yoga in 2005. The yoga practice for me was a gentler way of approaching my body and I soon began to feel the moving meditation of the practice within me. Some injuries took me on and off the mat for a while and soon enough I wanted to deepen my practice and considered doing a yoga certification. Being a dance teacher for over 12 years, I thought it made sense to add yoga to my bag of expertise. So I thought. Becoming a yoga teacher has given me so much more than I had ever imagined! It gave me confidence, calmness, tools and knowledge about myself and others. The exchange with my students daily, gives me a lot humility, honesty and the hunger for self-study and for creating a positive force in the world.
I knew about Africa Yoga Project but it wasn’t until recently when I went to level one and two trainings of Baptiste Yoga that I truly was moved by all the work the organization does. The biggest thing for me was the fact that this organization is about empowering people to reach their full potential, therefore creating positive and substantial change in the world. I believe in giving and giving in a way that makes an impact in people’s lives. I have been fortunate to work with non-profit organizations through dancing either being a performer or a teacher. Especially being a dance teacher I have felt and seen the impact that art can have on a child, teenager or adult. Throughout the years of working in this capacity, I felt a strong connection to service through assisting people in getting the tools they wanted and needed to make a change in their lives and consequently in others. That’s why Africa Yoga Project speaks so loudly into my soul. It’s an organization that works WITH “the ones in need” not for them. Nobody deserves more or less, nobody is better or worse than others. We are all equal, and TOGETHER we are so much more powerful, and together we can share, give, receive and learn so much more!
Please consider helping me in this journey. My goal is to raise $10,000 by March 2015 and then pay for my ticket fee to get to Kenya where I will spend a couple weeks learning, being of service, receiving and giving. I truly believe being there will enhance my life, my classes, and the lives of all the people I have the chance to share my experience with. Any donation can make such a big impact in an African community and with your help, we all can create substantial and powerful change! My ultimate goal is to, when the time arrives, go back to Brasil and start something very similar to the Africa Yoga Project there. So, help me in empowering Africans, and Brazilians in the future :), to live to their full potential, shinning brighter than ever, and produce, create, work and build a better present for them and a better future for so many to come!
Thank you so much for your trust and support in this journey!
